Prioritizing Time and Planning Ahead

In corporate America, effective time management skills are very important.  Training in time management skills should begin early on in the business leader’s career.  This should also be a part of business skills training in corporate America.

So, how does the business leader in corporate America go about building effective time management skills?  The first priority is to keep a journal of how they spend their working day.  This should be another part of effective training skills that are part of business skills training.  Keep a running journal for at least a week that documents what work was completed and how all the time in the work environment was spent. Learning how you spent your day will help you organize your day much better in the future.

Next, set your business priorities.  What is most important?  Meeting with clients?  Working in the office?  Supervising the staff?  Make important decisions on where you focus your most time and energy and prioritize them.  For example, you might decide to spend 50 percent of your time with key clients and divide the other 50 percent between paper work in the office and supervising staff.  Creating a “To Do” list can help organize your day making sure you perform the most difficult tasks first and get them done.

Set a business goal.  Once you’ve established a business goal, you should determine the steps that should be taken to accomplish that goal.  For example, if you wish to double sales, then perhaps more energy should be focused on advertising or marketing to attract more paying clients.  Know how to prioritize your goals by creating objectives for them.  Determine what needs to be done now and what can wait until later.

Meet with staff on a regular basis and discuss the goals that you’ve established for the company.  Let them understand what the goals are and the part they play in achieving the goals.  Try to fill the staff with enthusiasm for the company goals.  This lets them know that you are all on the same team and working together.  Delegating responsibility to them will motivate them as well.

Have realistic goals that can be accomplished. Don’t shoot too high or be unrealistic with your goals.  Having a strategy on how to hit these goals and managing your time will help eliminate errors and roadblocks and make you more effective at your job and eliminate wasted time.
