1. Empowerment System
Handing power over to the employees does not mean loss of control for management. It is intended to do the opposite, and it works. Employee empowerment is a tried and true strategy which enables them to take control and make important decisions for themselves about their jobs. In essence, it hands them responsibility and accountability for their own work and the end results. This system means working one on one with them, attempting to incorporate their feedback and ideas into the work.
2. Goal and Recognition System
Create a goal chart for each employee, updating and reviewing it on a regular basis. A special form of recognition should be incorporated so they feel they are being rewarded for their achievements and success. This gives them something to work toward. This involves setting clearly-defined goals which are both challenging and attainable. The goals set must be clear, concise and meaningful. It is a win-win system, so ramp up the goals.
3. Thank You System
Create a personalized thank you system which builds morale. This may consist of verbal acknowledgments, personally written thank you notes and formal letters for exceptional contributions and achievements. Remember that a simple compliment can go a long way. Encourage your team to regularly thank each other and provide deserved compliments through a “thank you and compliment box,” for example.
4. Huddle Up System
Besides regular team meetings and open forums, develop brief and random “huddles.” These should be informal and fun pow-wows geared toward positive reinforcement and team collaboration. You may want to prepare a brief bulleted agenda beforehand. The important thing is to make it fun, so huddle up.
