3 Vital Elements towards a Successful Leadership Development Program

Leadership is a commonly occurring buzzword in business nowadays.  Often, in an application for inclusion in an organization, leadership qualities are examined and quantified in order to qualify whether or not you fit.  In fact, most organizations put a prime on leadership and leadership training that they have gone forward and established a leadership development program to increase the human capital of those within their ranks.

Despite this being the case, there still exists some misconceptions about leadership and leadership training. Primary of which is the assumption that being successful means that you are a great leader. This is not necessarily so since the success or failure of an enterprise cannot be entirely attributed to the leader. In some cases, the organization persists and succeeds due more to its structure than to any individual effort. That said, a leadership training program must not solely focus on passing on a successful person’s knowledge and experience to its next generation of leaders as the incidence of success may not always lie with the successful person in question.  On the contrary, any successful leadership development program must take into consideration 3 vital elements in order to increase the chances of successfully developing leaders.

The 3 elements are as follows:

1. Broaden the definition of leadership. Similar to success, the road to achieving and sustaining leadership can be varied.  Do not stick to stereotypes of leadership, but instead, broaden its definition to include the nuances of different styles of leadership as applied by various types of individuals.

2. Consider your environment.  Different environments demands different leaders and as such, you should consider the environment which your leader works in to be of importance to the kind of leadership style that they should adapt.  In some organizations, collaboration is of prime importance while in others, they extol the virtues of the individual far above the group.  Know your environment and in so doing, practice whatever is needed instead of going for the stereotypical mode.

3. Emphasize collective knowledge.  In your trainings, emphasize the need for the leader to adopt different perspectives in viewing situations. They should know that though details are needed, the need to be able to see the whole picture bears heavily on their shoulders as well.  Thus, a leader must comprehend both in order to resort to the most suitable action available in their disposal.
