Multi-tasking has become a trend nowadays due to the increasing cost cutting measures that are being implemented in corporations. Thus, more often than not, hiring is frozen and the workers who are already within an organization are tasked to do more things in order to keep up with the daily demands of the business.
Though multi-tasking has previously been seen as an advantage, there are increasing reports to state otherwise. According to such, multitasking causes one to be more prone to distraction because you are more prone to lose focus. Also, multi-tasking is detrimental for task which involve complex tasks because you are not able to process all information deeply and thus make a well thought out decision. This is because working on a complex task entails that you process the information well and you have to put it in your long term memory. In addition, multi-tasking has been found to reduce social interaction which are essential for your holistic well being. Finally, multi-tasking can lead to a greater amount of stress because you are constantly juggling several unfinished tasks in your brain all at the same time.
If you are practicing multi-tasking, a great way to reduce its negative impacts would be to allow yourself to focus on a singular task for at least 20 minutes in order to give your brain ample time to absorb and process all information. At all cost, avoid distractions. As for your social interactions, it would be wise to allot a time for it as it would help improve your social skills and relationship with your co-workers.
If however, the task of multi-tasking cannot be completely abandoned, you must discipline yourself to prioritize the tasks at hand. Focus on each task but make sure that you realize that there are other tasks on hand. In other words, do each task, but be ready to move on to the next. Generally, making and sticking to a routine will quickly help your brain get used to adjusting. Finally, always make sure that your next time will be somehow connected to your next task so that your brain can maintain its cohesive state in order for it to still be best at making decisions.
