Sales Skills: 5 Necessary Skills Salesmen Can’t Learn in Business School

School is a very necessary part of finding a job in the market today. But for those you have chosen the career of a salesperson  there are many key components that your time is school will not prepare you with.

1. Confidence

The key component to sales jobs is confidence and this is something that can’t be taught in school. There are many people who lack the natural confidence that is required to open and close a sale and this will be their downfall. It is possible to learn confidence over time but it involves the student exposing themselves to as many situations as possible and learning from each situation. Going out in the field while in school is a great way for a sales person to slowly develop their confidence and social skills.

2. Networking

Being a good salesperson is all about networking and this is something that very few schools will teach. A proper salesperson is always networking and some of the most valuable connections a salesperson will acquire are the connections that they gain through business school. Networking is about the process of developing, maintaining and using contacts. A student who wishes to be successful should begin by building up their index of connections the moment they begin school.

3. Technology

Using technology in useful ways is a strategy that many business schools do not teach. Technology is moving very quickly and the best salespeople will learn how to appropriately leverage new technology to do their job better. Those who are mindful about the way technology will affect their sales will keep abreast of current technological developments both in their industry and overall.

4. Time Management

Time management is an often forgotten component to sales. Good salespeople need to be aware of which activities are taking them the most time and what the return on that time is. Most sales industries involve significant investments of time into a project before it becomes profitable. This means that a sales person needs to be able to identify activities that are time sinks and that are not a profitable use of their time.

5. Enthusiasm

In all areas of sales, most consumers are extremely aware of when their salesperson is not truly sincere about their product. Only salespeople that have a genuine love of their industry and honest sincerity about their product will be able to make effective sales and to thrive in the industry long-term. Someone who wishes to be in sales needs to find the area of sales that most suits them so that they do not lose their interest in their product. Honestly believing in a product can do far more to sell the product than any amount of time in business school.

Remember there is so much to learn with your time in school, but remember these pointers and try to implement them into your sales approach. These are ideas that are going to help you find the success you are looking for in your sales career.
